Zombieland (2009)

Image
"A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting bruiser in search of the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters striving to get to an amusement park join forces in a trek across a zombie-filled America." - IMDB Like many at the beginning of the 2010's decade, I was fully in the Zombie Apocalypse scene. I loved watching Zombie movies with my high school friends and we all had our apocalypse plans ready to go. Walking Dead of course was all the rage. But to me, nothing stood out more than Zombieland. It was a favorite for me and my friends. I can't even count how many times I've watched it in the last 10 years. It stands as not only my favorite Zombie flick, but one of my favorite movies of all time. It really boils down to the cast & characters. With only 4 main characters taking up 98% of screen time, it's really hard to not grow attached to the forming dysfunctional family. Emma Stone as Wichita is great and I have always been such a big fan o...

The Woman in Black (2012)

Image
"A young solicitor travels to a remote village where he discovers that the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals." - IMDB Flashback to 2012, the Potter fandom was still dealing with the end of Harry Potter. Woman in Black came along as Daniel Radcliffe's next big movie. So as many other Potter fans, I just had to support him. I was still sensitive to the horror genre as I have become seriously desensitized since, so this new scary movie was exciting for me. And it did, indeed, scare me big time - scared of the dark, running to and from the bathroom if I had to go when I watched the move after 10 pm, the whole shebang. After over 10 years, does it still hold up? Actually, yes. The visual aesthetic of the film is pleasing between the lighting and colors. The set design and the costume design add to this as well. I could actually compare it to the setting of Sleepy Hallow, just in a country-side-of-Coastal-England version. The story itself could also be...

The Shining (1980)

Image
"A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future." - IMDB The acting, the music, the camera movements & angles, the sense of isolation, and all the ghost encounters really drive the intensity that makes the Shining one of the most classic horror movies of all time. The story itself is very interesting. I know Stephen King was very inspired by the Stanley Hotel , which has it's own tales of death and hauntings. There's just something about old historic hotel lore that hits my vibe, and King's spin on this was basically perfect.  The acting in this movie is a huge standout. Isn't it true that Shelley Duvall, who played Wendy, was genuinely scared filming some scenes? Couldn't tell you which scenes because she always looked genuinely scared, which always makes me feel scared. Danny Lloyd as Danny is absolutely creepy...
