There's a reason this film is so highly regarded.

MAJOR SPOILERS because my whole film experience can be described by my reaction to the ending.

The whole damn movie, I was thinking the fantasy was real. Then, literally the last 60 seconds, dead serious, I started to think - wait.... this was all inside her head. Then she died, & I cried through the credits...........

Now... The brilliance of this ending (and Del Toro's writing) is that it is open to interpretation. A reddit thread taught me that whether you believe in the Fantasy or Reality path - you can find substantial evidence to support both. It's unclear whether she passes on to the fantasy world, or if she just dies. Either way, Ofelia's entire store is a grim fairy tale of sorts, no matter how you think it ends.

Also the Pale Man.............. not okay..............

My Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

"A worldwide epidemic encourages a biotech company to launch an organ-financing program similar in nature to a standard car loan. The repossession clause is a killer, however."

This is....... a film that happened. As odd as it was, I actually enjoyed it??? Anthony Head - always a pleasure as a Buffy & Merlin fan. He was 🔥🔥🔥 This is definitely a cult classic to the people that shop at Hot Topic, have tattoos, and hang Brandon Lee posters on their walls. Fans of this movie may also listen to Pierce the Veil and be obsessed with Phantom of the Opera or Tim Burton movies. Point is.... there is a specific audience this film was made for. It is for the utmost acquired taste so if you know you have such a taste, go watch this under the influence with your other weird friends.

"The life and career of legendary comedian Andy Kaufman."

IMDB

I had no idea who Andy Kaufman was. While I like Comedy integrated in other genres, I tend to not like Comedy as a genre itself. I have no background on the great comedians of our time nor do I have the interest to study them. However, I do respect them.

Andy Kaufman was quite the unusual character. He was ahead of his time - as in he was the ultimate internet troll. He was not a comedian in the sense he tried to make others laugh, he was always just trying to make himself laugh. His career was quite controversial - I, myself, probably would not have been a fan. He would've been attacked by cancel culture quite quickly in today's internet climate.

But he is quite the character case study. This biopic really honored him well. Jim Carrey was for sure the perfect casting. I highly recommend this film if you're in for a good Jim Carrey performance & a look into one of Comedy's most unusual entertainers.

My Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆
