Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Image
"With their warning about Lord Voldemort's return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes power at Hogwarts." - IMDB First of all, let's talk about some of the new cast & crew.  My #1 gurl, Luna Lovegood played by Evanna Lynch stole my heart. I was obsessed with the character & actress in an unhealthy way in middle school. Helena Bonham Carter, one of my favorite actresses of all time, is literally the only one that could've played Bellatrix this perfectly. I'm certain of that. George Harris arrives as Kingslety Shacklebolt (if anyone's got style it's him) & Natalia Tena is introduced as my Hufflepunk role model, Nymphadora Tonks. Imelda Staunton was also perfectly cast as the most hated Potter character of all time. I hate Umbridge, but Staunton is so enjoyable to watch. This is the first of (currently) 7 Wizarding World films David Yates has directed. I like his

Ghibli Films - July Movie Club

Image
A couple months back, I did a Ghibli movie club post where I highlighted a few Ghibli films that I watched. Here's a Part two follow up as I look back on some more Ghibli films. "On a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest gods and Tatara, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime." - IMDB There's is nothing I could compare this story too. There's blood and war mixed with magic and wonder. Supported by beautiful, breathtaking art & design, this is a fantasy adventure with the themes of peace & respect for nature at it's core. This is Miyazaki at his best. The two main characters, Ashitaka & San, are noble heroes, with San having such an iconic appearance good for any Ghibli cosplay. It's a sin not to include this film in your Ghibli marathon. My Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ "During her family's move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old gir

Thor: Love & Thunder (2022)

"Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct." - IMDB First of all, did it live up to Ragnarök for me? No. Ragnarök was just the perfect movie for me - it had the perfect balance of fun action and humor and had the greatest cast. This movie was lacking a bit. But was it better than Dark World? Hell yes. Was it better than the first Thor? Meh, I go back and forth. Honestly, I expected it to be worse, so I enjoyed it more than I anticipated. It's just the MCU in a post-ENDGAME world is not the same. We've had some great projects, like WandaVision , but the vibes... they're just different. I loved the idea of this city of the gods thing. They were useless, but the concept is fun. I think they made up a reason to allow Jane & those kids to have temporary godly powers. While this lead to some fun action scenes, they just threw an explanation around. But whatever. I loved t

The Day the Earth Stood Still

Image
"An alien lands in Washington, D.C. and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets." - IMDB Many Science Fiction stories tell the tale of how humanity is the cause of its own destruction. Our own inventions will turn around and obliterate us all. Whether it be nuclear bombs or AI robots, the fall of humanity would be caused by humans themselves. The Day the Earth Stood Still reflects this very idea (I'm talking about the original today, not the Keanu Reeves remake ). Klaatu is motivated to get the message of peace across to the world. His friendship with Bobby, an innocent child, is a way to show that he really does mean no harm. Klaatu also implies the strength and danger that Gort is capable of, but never intends to use that power to violently force the people of Earth to reason. He allows the people to think for themselves and decide what path to take while also urging what the correct decision would be. As sil

Lost - Seasons 1-3

Image
"The survivors of a plane crash are forced to work together in order to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island." - IMDB Season 1 I was very young when Lost was making its way as cultural phenomenon. The only thing I really remember from it was the airplane crash premise & the pop culture icon, Jorge Garcia. I have since watched Once Upon a Time & Bates Motel - two shows that I very much obsessed over within the last couple years. I know very well that those same writers, producers, & the creators were top people in making Lost & I recognized their names every time when Lost rolled their opening credits. Given their reputation, I had to move Lost up my watch list. I would've watched it eventually, but I had to jump in sooner given how much I enjoyed their other shows. I knew this was a show about a bunch of people stranded on an Island, but no one said anything about this supernatural creature hiding in the jungle whispering words in people's
