AUGUST WATCH PARTY - Lee (2023), Kill Bill Volume 2 (2004), The Giver (2014)

"War correspondent Lee Miller travels to the front lines of World War II to embark on a mission to uncover the hidden truths of the Third Reich. But in the wake of betrayal, a reckoning will come over the truths of her own past." -  IMDB    There are so many movies out there covering WWII but I really enjoyed this one. We see the war through the perspective of a war photographer - bless them, that's a crazy job. I always love watching biopics that encourage me to do further research. Lee literally posed for a picture in Hitler's bathtub during the final days of the war. Bad👏ass👏 This was also a movie that made me deep dive the efforts it took to spread word about the Holocaust. The concept and imagery was truly disturbing and was considered unbelievable or too disgusting to share. But there were a dozen people, just like Lee Miller, that fought for that truth to reach everyone. The truth had to be known. All those Jews were taken away and never to be seen again. Nob...

Riverdale

"While navigating the troubled waters of romance, school and family, Archie and his gang become entangled in dark Riverdale mysteries." - IMDB   Riverdale was once a very, very popular show. Like many shows, somewhere halfway through, it got really bad really fast. It may have started out phenomenally, but it never stuck the landing and was hanging on for dear life until its end. That was the extent of my knowledge going into the show. I’ve now seen it for myself… yeah… my observation before watching a single episode was correct. I have a lot to say lol. Season 1  I honestly feel like they tried to queerbait me, and I totally fell for it because I started shipping Veronica and Betty in like episode 1 or 2. I wanna go ahead and put that out there because this made it pretty impossible to invest in their other relationships with literally anyone else. That being said, the actual gay—Kevin Keller… best character. No matter what was happening, he was usually the one I vibed with...

JULY WATCH PARTY - Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003), Steve Jobs (2015), The Hate U Give (2018)

"After waking from a four-year coma, a former assassin wreaks vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her." -  IMDB    At this point, I’ve seen maybe half of Tarantino’s films going into Kill Bill. That being said, I felt that I was going to see something special when the very intense black-and-white flashback was followed by the intro credits rolling, with Bang Bang playing in the background. So this is definitely a standard Tarantino film: good and unique shots, music, dialogue, and an amazing cast as well. All the pieces to make this a significant addition to the director’s repertoire. The internet definitely loves this movie. There are still many relevant memes and sounds—some I didn’t even know were from this movie. I think this is another Tarantino trope; it’s not a Tarantino movie unless you can get at least one meme out of it. The Japanese elements were a highlight here. The anime segment was a pretty dope way of giving an origin story. Honestly, Uma’s ent...

The Americans

Image
"At the height of the Cold War, married KGB spies pose as Americans in Washington, D.C." - IMDB   I heard Winona talk about binging the show in an interview once and her enthusiasm kinda convinced me. If Winona vouches for the show, it must be good.  Season 1 I only knew the premise going in, and the only prediction I had was that maybe one of the main couple would be a full KGB loyalist while the other had gotten soft and hoped for a normal American life. That was basically established in the first half of the pilot, but it was a little more than that. Elizabeth seemed to have tried to disassociate from the family part of the job—like building up walls so as not to become emotionally attached while accomplishing missions. Philip is ready to desert the motherland at a moment’s notice and clearly has fallen in love with his fake wife. I thought this would establish some sort of season arc with Elizabeth slowly breaking down those walls, but they started coming down when she an...
