The Heat (2013)
There's not much to say about this movie except that this is a film where Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy team together to create an iconic comedic duo that we didn't know we needed. The plot is fine, but these two lead ladies are the heart & soul of the film. The supporting actors play of well from them, but more importantly, Bullock & McCarthy play well off each other, & that's what makes the movie.
I have three favorite scenes - the entire nightclub sequence, their interrogation scene (the one that starts off with Mullens throwing a phone book at the guy's face), and the Denny's scene. The more chaos the better. I honestly want to know how much improv Bullock & McCarthy were able to do together, because I felt like some scenes must've been.
The character development worked really well for both. Bullock as Ashburn goes from this isolated know-it-all to one who is open & honorable to the first person she thought of as family. McCarthy as Mullins is introduced as a psychotic punk who is revealed to actually be someone with a big heart & cares for those close to her. Heart warming characterization aside, these two women are absolutely hilarious. They are capable of being dramatic, but their comedic performances are what make this one of my favorite films. Not to mention they know how to get things done, & done right.
My Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆
