Scooby Doo Movie Review - The Ultimate Guide

I watched almost all the Scooby Doo films so you don't have to. Consider this the definitive review of all Scooby Doo movie adventures. It's no question how impactful the franchise has been in the last 50+ years. How bland your childhood must've been without Mystery Inc.

The Ultimate Guide

Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase  (2001)

"When Scooby and the gang get trapped in a video game created for them, they must fight against the 'Phantom Virus'. To escape the game they must go level by level and defeat the game once and for all." (IMDB)

OMG the concept of this one is so good. I thought the Jumanji remakes were cool, but apparently Scooby Doo did it first. And even almost 20 years later, it still holds up. It was great to see the video game personas, designed with vintage clothes and art style, team up with the current gang during the final battle where a handful of classic villains from the original show showed up. Most levels of the game took the gang to places they'd never normally be able to go. I'd love to play a full length action adventure video game version of this movie. I wonder if any kids who watched this were ever inspired to grow up to be game developers? Or became fans of Sword Art Online?

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy (2014)

"Velma discovers she's inherited her great-great-uncles' cursed castle in Transylvania, Pennsylvania. This Scooby-Doo adventure has enough spooky fun to make the whole family come alive!" (IMDB)

I'm gonna be honest. I really really enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It gets so many bonus points just for being so out of the box for a Scooby adventure. The intro and opening credits built up way more suspense than was needed. They literally blew up the mystery machine. This movie takes a lot of risks and I personally enjoyed it. The editing was so different and I loved the twist that it was a conspiracy involving culprits from the original show. Love or hate, I appreciate it greatly for doing something that could be seen as so controversial, but still enjoyable.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

Scooby-Doo and the Samurai Sword (2009)

"The Mystery Inc. crew travels the globe on a transcontinental treasure hunt to solve a series of ancient riddles. Scooby-Doo and Shaggy are indoctrinated by an unlikely Sword Master." (IMDB)

Two words: Robot. Ninjas. This was really fun. The story and premise was cool. The adventure was cool. They actually had some great fight scenes. The voice acting was pretty good. The whole "Shaggy & Scooby ride a dragon" thing was just.... what the heck? This is was everything I could've hoped for for a Japan themed Scooby movie.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆

Scooby-Doo in Where's My Mummy (2005)

"Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang become involved in a supernatural mystery in Egypt." (IMDB)

A few years following the success of the Mummy and its sequel, Mystery inc brought in their own spin of the concept, giving us a classic Scooby adventure. And spoiler alert, the idea of making Velma the "man in a mask" is something that we never see. It worked brilliantly in execution too as the rest of the gang didn't rely on the super smart girl to get things done, also it was a good twist in general. It was a great way to teach kids the importance of respecting history, as history must be preserved if we're going to learn from it.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Aloha, Scooby-Doo! (2005)

"The Mystery Gang goes to Hawaii for the Big Kahuna of Hanahuna Surfing Contest. However, the gang and the locals find the island invaded by the vengeful Wiki Tiki spirit and his demons." (IMDB)

This was one of my favorites as a kid, and even now this was still one of the better ones. I still love it, honestly you can't go wrong with a Hawaiian adventure. The intro credits were pleasant, the music was lovely, and the movie itself was so charming and fun for the whole family.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Music of the Vampire (2012)

"When Daphne becomes the star of a vampire film, the production is thrown into chaos by a real vampire, forcing the Scooby-Doo team to investigate who's behind this monstrous mayhem." (IMDB)

Um..... I have several thoughts.... Well I love the irony that Daphne is the one that got all googly eyed over the vampires considering that Sarah Michelle Gellar the Vampire Slayer portrayed Daphne in the live actions. Also, I feel like the story was very influenced by other vampire stories in culture, and the vampire lore was pretty interesting.

And the musical..... yeah.... that happened....

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur (2011)

"When the Scooby Doo gang encounters the horrible Phantosaur, they investigate to find out what's really behind this prehistoric haunting." (IMDB)

LOL this movie had no business being funny like it was. And Shaggy tryna be Keanu Reeves??? I don't know what I expected from a Scooby Dinosaur movie, but this wasn't it.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King (2008)

"Scooby-Doo and Shaggy must go into the underworld ruled by the Goblin King in order to stop a mortal named The Amazing Krudsky who wants power and is a threat to their pals, Fred, Velma and Daphne." (IMDB)

Wow, when they said let's make a Halloween Scooby movie, they do not play around. What the heck? It wasn't even a mystery, it was a fantasy action movie. It stands out for being unique from other Scooby experiences so far. Scooby and Shaggy really went against their usually persona and really shined in this film. As an adult, their scaredy cat personalities are annoying, so I enjoyed this change. I kinda wish the monster versions of Fred, Velma, and Daphne had more screen time, that would've been fun. But yeah.... this movie was something else.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost (1999)

"Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Gang visit Oakhaven, Massachusetts to seek strange goings on involving a famous horror novelist and his ancestor who is rumored be a witch." (IMDB)

If you don't know the Hex Girls, then either your childhood isn't complete and/or you didn't grow up to be an emo gothic mess. Witch's Ghost was a fun one, villain voiced by Tim Curry, and several jokes that made this adult laugh. It's a keeper.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)

"The Mystery Gang reunite and visit Moonscar Island, a remote island with a dark secret. Daphne wants more than just a villain in a costume, and they get more than they ever expected." (IMDB)

I watched these movies in order of release. And after watching 4 bad Scooby experiences, the film wasted no time establishing itself as a classic Scooby adventure. In the first five minutes we heard "Scooby Doo! Where are you?!?", the Scooby theme playing during a classic chase scene, and the "you meddling kids and dumb dog" line - these things completely absent in the first 4 movies. And after the absence of Fred, Daphne, and Velma, seeing the gang reunite with Scooby Snacks in hand was most satisfying. The plot itself was fun and well thought out and it was the perfect balance of mystery and humor. It was at this point that my real Scooby marathon began.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster (2004)

"While the gang travel to Scotland to visit Daphne's cousin and witness the Highland Games, they find themselves terrorized by the legendary Loch Ness Monster." (IMDB)

Watching these movies chronologically as I have, getting to the Lock Ness movie is a joy! In all the past movies, I either disliked Velma's voice actor, or Daphne's. But this was the first movie I like both - thanks Grey & Mindy! This was one I really enjoyed as a kid for some reason, and today it's still a fun little Scooby experience.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Moon Monster Madness (2015)

"The Scooby gang investigate a possible alien presence while exploring a moon base built by an eccentric billionaire celebrity." (IMDB)

Scooby Doo in Space! Of course Mark Hamill does a voice in this. At first, the whole "base on the dark side of the moon" thing was, I don't know, out there(?) for a Scooby Doo movie. But it did grow on me. The music was epic and it was actually pretty funny. And the Velma-Daphne arc was sweet. I guess I like this one.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost (2019)

"Scooby-Doo and the gang must track down the last of thirteen ghosts they had hunted years ago." (IMDB)

Sorry, I was distracted by the presence of Nolan North. (Speaking of VA, this new Velma was okay...) The beginning of this was interesting. The fact that the gang was about to retire and the that Daphne, Scooby, and Shaggy trapped 12 ghosts on their own without arguably the most helpful members was a great way to start the story. The Daphne-Fred leadership battle dynamic was meant to be a swing toward girl power. But it wasn't a jab at anti-masculinity given that Fred likes Daphne, had an identity crisis when his only role and job was taken, and went to freaking cheerleader camp. Fred is a natural born leader, and Daphne is a power figure on her own. This whole arc was actually well done. The mystery and adventure was fun and I had a few laughs. I definitely expected it to be worse.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Camp Scare (2010)

"Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Freddy, Daphne and Velma fish for clues to solve the mysteries of The Woodsman, The Fishman and The Banshee of Black Canyon." (IMDB)

Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders  (2000)

"A cosmic case of flying saucers, intergalactic intrigue and out-of-this-world romance launches Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Gang into their most unearthly adventure ever." (IMDB)

The whole plot with Shaggy and the Alien was something I remembered so clearly from my childhood. And seeing it now, the story is still a very unique plot in the Scooby verse. While the first half is a "desert town UFO sighting government conspiracy investigation" done the Scooby way, the true alien reveal in the second half is a real plot twist if you're not expecting it.

Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo (2010)

"The gang goes on a trip to check on Velma's younger sister, Madelyn. She's been studying stage magic at the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy, where apparently there have been sightings of a giant griffin. The gang decides to investigate." (IMDB)

Alakazam! I'll admit. this was a fun one. I had a few laughs. I loved the 70s feel and the original character designs of the gang. Overall it was a fun Hogwarts Scooby Doo adventure.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon (2012)

"The Mega Mondo Pop Cartoon-a-Con in sunny California marks the spot for mystery in this all-new original Scooby-Doo adventure! Shaggy and Scooby-Doo stop gruesome villain Mr. Hyde." (IMDB)

While the Avengers were off in New York fighting Chitari, the gang was at San Diego Comic Con fighting Mr. Hyde with Blue Falcon. Velma was extra savage in this movie, and it was hilarious. And I loved the little arc where Shaggy & Scooby tried to be real heroes.

Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Big Top Scooby Doo! (2012)

"Scooby-Doo and the gang go on vacation to Atlantic City, but they get involved in a mystery at a circus." (IMDB)

This movie was actually funny and I loved the circus character designs. Also the last minute train adventure was surprisingly fun as well.

Rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright (2013)

"Daphne and Fred try out for a talent show that takes place in an old opera house, but the show may be cancelled before rehearsals when a masked Phantom re-appears from the past." (IMDB)

Scooby Doo & the Phantom of the Opera! The gag with multiple phantoms was funny, that little car chase at the end was cool, and Fred & Daphne are adorable.

Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island (2019)

"The gang is pulled out of retirement to investigate a mystery on a familiar zombie-infested island." (IMDB)

The call backs and the self aware humor was fun in the first half. But this is supposedly a sequel to Zombie Island (and apparently a continuation to 13th Ghost), so there was too much expected with this one. It wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but I wouldn't go as far to say it was good either.

Rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

"Time to Swash some Buckles!" The next couple movies were okay. Loved the idea of the premise of both. And both movies had some funny moments.

Chill Out, Scooby-Doo! (2007)

"The gang's vacation to Paris takes a wrong turn when Scooby and Shaggy miss their flight and end up on a skydiving expedition in the Himalayas. To make matters worse, upon arrival they must outrun the Abominable Snowmonster." (IMDB)

Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! Pirates Ahoy! (2006)

"Arrgh. It's horror on the high seas when Scooby-Doo and the gang take a creepy cruise into one of the world's most mysterious places - the legendary Bermuda Triangle." (IMDB)

Rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire (2003)

"The gang go to Australia to investigate the recent disappearances of the performances at the music festivals, by the so called 'Yowie Yahoo'." (IMDB)

Going from Cyber Chase to this, they took the animation down a notch to make it a bit more like the original show. The music also features original songs and remixes of original songs the show had as well. Between the art style, original costumes, music, and vintage sound effects, this was a good mix of old & new that I don't think is seen in other movies. Also, Velma finally sounds like Velma. I didn't like her voice in the movies prior. And shout out to the 2nd appearance of the iconic Hex Girls!

Rating: ★★★★★★☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo and Monster of Mexico  (2003)

"Join Scooby, Shaggy and the gang as they visit a friend in Mexico to celebrate the Day of the Dead! Only this time it's a monster that terrorizes the town." (IMDB)

Voice acting was hit or miss, but the music was good, and Fred was funny.

Rating: ★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Scooby Doo! and the Reluctant Werewolf (1988)

"Shaggy is turned into a werewolf, and it's up to Scooby, Scrappy and his girlfriend to help him win the contest." (IMDB)

This one is a bit more fun and better written than it's 2 predecessors. The concept of Shaggy being forced to become a werewolf and challenged to play a game of MarioKart to obtain his humanity would've been a spicy plot in a show like Buffy or Supernatural, to be honest. Dracula was a fun character. The girlfriend is so basic and forgettable. Mystery Inc was missing. And the movie was too long. But I'll admit, I did chuckle a few times.

Rating: ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

This is a personal pet peeve of mine, but I hate when celebrities who are not actors come in and pretend they know how to act or voice act. Voice acting is awkward, stale, and unnatural, and it just seems they put their names on the poster as a means to attract a particular audience. So here I place the following Scooby experiences:

Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery (2014)

Scooby-Doo! and Kiss: Rock & Roll Mystery (2015)

Scooby-Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon (2016)

We all love a good chase sequence with Scooby and Shaggy, but these next 2 movies just seemed like 90 minute Scooby-Shaggy sequences. While the premises sound interesting, the final products just didn't age well. What turns me off big time is the absence of the Mystery inc. I love Scooby & Shaggy like everyone else, but it's hard to watch a vintage Scooby experience like these movies without the rest of the gang around. Little kids will enjoy the simplicity of these movies, but as an adult and experienced cartoon enthusiast, I don't think these first Scooby Doo films are enjoyable for everyone.

Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers (1987)

"After the death of Shaggy's Uncle Beaureguard, he, Scooby, and Scrappy arrive at his uncle's plantation to collect the inheritance. But as soon as they arrive, they find it is haunted by the ghost of a Confederate soldier. With this spook on their tails while they search for Shaggy's inheritance, they hired to help of the Boo Brothers, a trio of ghost-exterminators to help catch this nasty ghoul." (IMDB)

Rating: ★★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1988)

"While working as gym teachers at an all-girls finishing school, Scooby-Doo, Shaggy and Scrappy-Doo get tangled up in a monstrous mystery." (IMDB)

Rating: ★☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Honorable Mentions

Scooby-Doo & Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleased

We're in an era where live action remakes are becoming the norm. Some are good, some are bad. But let's be honest, Scooby Doo was the one that truly worked.

It honestly blows my mind how phenomenally casted these movies were. The director wanted a real Hollywood couple for Fred and Daphne. Sarah Michelle Gellar was the girl power icon of the time. And Freddie Prinze Jr as Fred is hilarious. But Linda Cardellini and Matthew Lillard - They were literally born to play Velma and Shaggy. How were they born to look and sound just like the characters like that? It's insane. Not to mention Matthew became the official voice for Shaggy several years after these films.

These movies successfully humanize the Mystery Inc and add different layers to them that we don't see in any animated versions. There's a lot of heart put into the films and characters, and even as an adult, I'll admit there are a couple scenes that tug on the heart string, both emotionally and nostalgically. These movies also do such a great job incorporating the staple elements seen in the cartoon and bringing them to the real world, mostly through the use of the CGI Scooby. And the use of original costumes in Monsters Unleashed was an amazing tribute to the original cartoon show.

Both films are a great tribute to the Scooby Legacy, great family films, and should be included in any Scooby Doo marathon you ever have.

Any not included on this list

I'm sure there are a few I haven't seen, but I sure watched a lot of them. The ones that I decided to not watch are probably some of the newer ones, but I highly recommend watching them anyway. Some Scooby movies I've seen were better than I expected so you never know.

Dishonorable Mentions

Any Other Live Action

Honestly, with the high quality Sarah, Freddie, Linda, and Matthew were able to bring to the big screen, it's nearly impossible to live up to their standards. I've seen a couple of those made-for-TV cartoon network live actions. I couldn't tell what they were about as they were pretty forgettable.

Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights

There may be some unenjoyable Scooby experiences, but Arabian Nights is just bad. Most of the film has nothing to do with Scooby at all. Shaggy is off screen telling a gender swapping version of Aladdin with Yogi Bear as Genie, and there was another re-telling of Sinbad in the 2nd half that I didn't even bother watching at all. Not that a gender swap version of a classic fairytale is a bad idea, it's just not what I wanted as a Scooby experience. This is a film that will waste an hour of your life. Don't bother.

Scoob!

I'm going to be honest, I didn't even watch this movie. Just the fact that they chose celebrities and known actors, like Zac Efron and Amanda Seyfried, rather than the usual voice actors like Matthew Lillard and Grey Griffin, really offended me. At least Frank Welker was there to play Scooby I guess. Between that and the animation, this movie just seemed like a cash grab to me to compete as a box office hit rather than an authentic Scooby experience. Maybe it's good, but I never plan on watching it, so you let me know.

Scooby Doo! Adventures: The Mystery Map

Um....... I dare you to watch 10 minutes and you let me know which pre school program this was a special for..... I wish I could delete the 2 minutes of dialogue I actually payed attention to out of my brain.

A Very Very Honorable Mention

Scoobynatural

This is hands down one of the greatest crossovers of all time. Whether you're a Supernatural fan or Scooby Doo fan, or both, this is THE experience. This felt like a Scooby Doo experience, with a polished art style of the original show's animation, looking for clues and chase segments, and the Mystery gang's usual banter and tropes. It also felt like a Supernatural episode with the humor, dialogue, and the actually supernatural case itself. It was great to hear Jared, Jensen, and Misha voice their characters while the usual Scooby cast voiced their characters as well.

While this became a Supernatural classic and one of the best episodes of all time, this was also one of the funniest Scooby experiences ever. Because this is an adult show, so to speak, the Scooby gang was given bits of dialogue that you don't hear. Like Daphne saying "Heaven? Hell? Am I going to Hell?!?" and "I'll carry 2 shot guns!" And then Fred saying "Did you send him back to the firey pits whence he came?" Not to mention their casual nonchalant reactions to the literal dead bleeding bodies ("Well that's not good."). Seriously. I was dying. 10/10 for sure!

Final Thoughts

Scooby Doo is a precious being and must be protected at all costs. As a kid, I loved the shenanigans Scooby and Shaggy were able to get into. As an adult, I appreciated anytime they decided to do something different and make them purposefully useful. Velma is still an inspiration for girls to be smart, but something I didn't realize until this marathon is that she is so savage. Daphne can just be another pretty face, but there are several movies where she displays awesome talents that show how strong she actually is. And Fred is a great leader, but if there's one thing I got from this marathon, it's how funny he is. He has stupid one liners, either as an attempt to create a catch phrase or just a moment of his dumbfoundedness. Honestly, Fred is my favorite now. He made me smile the most and I was surprised to enjoy his character like this.

My favorite Scooby movies either have a great theme, did something different with the characters or something else, or were simply well written. Not every movie is funny. Not every mystery was interesting. Some were just better than others. But every time, the movies try and revolve around a different creature or different part of the world. Character designs were always on pointe. Voice acting was usually good too.

I love Grey and Matthew as Daphne and Shaggy. But the real hero is Frank Welker. He has been the voice of Fred for over 50 years!!! That's a whole lifetime! He's probably the only VA from the original show alive, let alone still voicing his character. He's also taken the role of Scooby Doo as well as Fred. Welker is a true legend, and I had to end this 20 page thesis gushing about how great he is, because he deserves all the praise and love in the world. Thank you, Frank!

And as Scooby would say --- "Scooby Dooby Doooooooo!"
