To me, animation is the true essence of the Disney Studios. The potential of this film is OUTSTANDING. It’s almost frustrating as there were so many great components here that just did not work well enough together to make a perfect film experience. The music was hit or miss. This met expectations and then some.  I know a movie is good when I keep commenting about the technical aspects, which I don't often do as much as I should - the use of lighting and shadow, coloring, cinematography, costume and set design. All the pieces are put together perfectly once again to make this a beautifully immersive cinematic experience. This world feels so lived in. The use of fictional languages with amazing line delivery by the actors goes such a long way. The music was amazing and really felt a character on it's own. It's power to create tension and emotion is the purpose of a good soundtrack, but some movies do it better than others - thanks Hans Zimmer. When I first watched the film - no. No, I was not disappointed. This movie, quite literally has everything. It's a Sci Fi Action Comedy Drama film. It makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you smile, makes you think. There's a lot of nonsense, and a lot of heart. I feel the passion behind the screen. The Actors and writers and cast and crew really made this a special experience. I will never be able to unsee Robert Downey Jr.'s performance. It was so offensive in all the right ways - the only instance of "black face" that seems to excepted (based on comments I've seen on the internet) , you know, since he was just a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude playing a dude. While RDJ is the unquetionable standout of the film, the rest of it is quite funny. The plot of these actors running wild in the jungles of Vietnam while facing dangers of this mob run by a child was great. Comedy is so hit or miss for me, but I found myself laughing pretty much every other scene. The set design, costume design, make up, prosthetics, every teensy detail did not go amiss to ensure that this film looked like a Dr. Seuss story come to life. As I've gotten older, I've learned to appreciate how well done this movie is. Every intricate detail helped create this immersive lived in world that somehow exists in a snowflake. All the cast, including extras, also do a good job representing this weird species of people. The film also told the original Grinch story while also expanding lore, which we didn't need but got anyway, and it was great. Of course this is a whole Christmas tale.
